UFC announcer Joe Rogan doesn’t like hearing the news of former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey talking about her soon leaving MMA to go into movies. Rousey, 29, hasn’t fought in a year since her 2nd round stoppage loss to Holly Holm in November 2015.
Rogan feels that when you get a fighter talking about leaving the sport soon, then they should probably be leaving it already. In other words, if the fighter isn’t fully committed to fighting, then they should probably have already left the sport.
Rousey is coming back next month to a very, very tough fight against UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 on December 30 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nunes, 29, is the type of fighter who would have given Rousey problems even when she was at her best before her loss to Holm. But now that Rousey has been out of MMA for a year in dealing with injuries and what not, she’s likely going to have a lot of problems with Nunes. There’s going to be rust that Rousey is going to have in her game that she’ll need to deal with, and if she’s not mentally into the sport any longer, then it’ll be even worse for her.
“It’s exciting to see her to come back if she wants to come back, but whenever someone starts saying a couple more fights and then I’ll go into movies, I go, ‘Man, I don’t like hearing that.’ ‘Cause when you have one foot out the door, you should probably put both feet out the door,” said Rogan to TMZ.com. “But she might not REALLY have one foot out the door.”
It doesn’t matter whether Rousey is talking about her plans of leaving UFC soon. Even if she was keeping quiet about it, she would still likely have problems against Nunes. But by Rousey talking about it, she now has a built in excuse in case things don’t work out for her against Nunes. Rousey can blame it on her not being mentally into MMA any longer. The fans won’t blame her if the results of her fight aren’t positive ones.
Rousey needs to beat Nunes to help setup a big money match-up between her and Cyborg. That’s the match that everyone wants to see. If Rousey loses to Nunes, it would be her second straight defeat, nd it would likely destroy the interest from MMA fans in a fight between her and Cyborg.
